New Zealand Spinach Green Smoothie
New Zealand Spinach is a green leaf vegetable native to New Zealand as well as Argentina, Australia, Chile and Japan. It grows abundantly in warm climates, and is rarely cultivated. New Zealand Spinach is similar to regular spinach, although it is considered as a weed but is entirely edible. New Zealand spinach has many health benefits, as it is loaded with beta-carotene as well as vitamins A and C. It is also high in antioxidants, and has been known to promote a healthy immune system as well as preventing cancer. It has a bitter flavor that can be tempered by boiling the leaves or blanching it briefly in hot water. For this recipe, we will be using New Zealand spinach as the main ingredient for a healthy and refreshing smoothie.
1 cup whole milk
1 bunch New Zealand Spinach
½ cup fresh strawberries
½ cup blueberries
1 cup honey or sugar cane extract
Separate the New Zealand spinach leaves from the stems and wash thoroughly. Place the leaves in a blender then add milk, strawberries and blueberries. Blend until smooth in a high-speed blender. Serve in a tall glass with lots of ice.
